Summary/Abstract: The common fact in Polish grammar is that the vocative case is used very seldom and it is replaced by nominative. But according to this paper, inspite of some linguists’ opinion, vocative does not disappear completely in contemporary Polish. Vocative is still used in traditional phrases (e.g. in the beginning of letters) and in texts which represent the high register. Vocative is reffering to formality, gentleness and the high level of emotion. Nominative in vocative function indicates colloquialness, lower level of gentleness nad the lack of emotion.
