Summary/Abstract: This paper is part of Conference proceedings, published in 2001, called "Pathways: Approaching to the Study and Teaching of Folklore" which was organized one year before by Nordic Folklore Network with Folkloristic departments of the University of Turk and Abo Academy in Turku, Finland. The paper itself brings experience from the field of the author, a Finnish folklorist, which during the search in fieldwork for folklore genres encountered the desperate need of people to express their personal stories about the memories of the civil war of 1918 in Finland. In this case, she orients her research in exploration of oral history, trying thus to review and analyze the reasons and the need of people to express their personal sad experiences. Through this analysis, along with historical data that are an inevitable part of this paper, the author - a folklorist, whose aim is not to find the historical truth, brings an interesting approach to research method in the field as well the diffraction of oral personal narrative as an attractive genre for folklore studies.
