Summary/Abstract: Petre P. Mavrogheni – important politician and economist – ran for the throne of Moldavia in 1858-1859, although he did not meet the eligibility conditions established by the Convention of Paris (August 7/19, 1858). Indeed, he was the son of a Greek father, who was not born in Moldavia, and belonged to the Sturdza family through his mother. This study attempts to make clear the circumstances and the motives behind this candidacy and presents as well the two violent anonymous pamphlets, in lyrics, The Foreigner and Mavroene, targeted against him precisely in that context.
