Summary/Abstract: Abstract. The article analyzes the violent protests that broke out in Greece just before Christmas 2008 when the police caused the death of an adolescent. The Greek and foreign coverage of these events are presented and assessed. The author demonstrates that a weariness about politics exists today in broad circles of the Greek population, and this lethargy has recently been exacerbated by several political scandals. Since the 2008 protests were mainly carried out by high school and university students, the author focuses on problems within the educational system and among youth. Despite varying attempts to reform, no fundamental solutions have been reached. Finally, the author affirms that while violent protests like those of December 2008 could certainly happen again, the protests, for various reasons, still did not mark the beginning of a genuine social movement.
