Relationship between public and science: Some conceptual aspects, open issues and the role of the media in establishing the relationship between the

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the theoretical and empirical aspects of the relationship between the public and science. Since the word is about a relatively new and multidisciplinary field of study, the purpose of this article is at first to overview different studies in this area. The second part of the article deals with the results of public opinion surveys, showing ambivalent public attitudes towards science and technology issues. In the next part, the focus is on the role of the media in shaping public perceptions of science and technology. A number of analyses were made of media and newspaper coverage of this issue, emphasising the growth in the proportion of articles on science and technology and the special importance of science sections. This is also evident from a content analysis of the weekly section Znanost published within the Delo daily newspaper, which represents an important framework for popularising particular science fields and establishing Slovenian science journalism.
