Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the reasons behind the contemporary appeal of the figure of Walter Benjamin. It traces the history of the reception and interpretation of the body of his work and points out that interpreting his work today cannot be done without taking into account traditional interpretations. Benjamin’s notion of aura is discussed throughout the article and is conceived as a tool for defining our relationship to the – broadly accepted, yet still elusive – author. Benjamin’s conception of the transformation of artwork and human experience is put in the wider context of the early theories of modernity and some of its shortcomings are pointed out. An explanation is provided of his method – especially those aspects relevant to sociological and cultural theory – with an emphasis on the study of the materiality of artefacts
