Summary/Abstract: The coins discovered around “Precista” fortified church from Galaţi (architectural monument built during the Middle Ages, in 1647) prove the existence of an intense economic activity in the XVIth – XIXth centuries. The influence of the new political and economic conditions of those days was reflected even in the circulation of currency in Galaţi and around, by the gradual replacement of the most usual currency used during the previous period. Thus, the Hungarian Denar, the most frequent currency in the XVIth century, was replaced, in the following century, by the Polish currency. Among the fake currencies coined in Moldavia in the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries, the Ottoman currency became the most important. Among the numismatic pieces found around “Precista” Church, the Hungarian Denar, issued by Wladislav II (1490-1510), is the oldest medieval coin found in the old town of Galaţi.
