Summary/Abstract: Living on a border often means living at the end of the world. At the periphery, remote from the center, removed from where life is most vibrant. Europe is inhabited by many ethnicities, and in the course of its violent history, state borders have often shifted. As a result of these shifts, populations living in the border areas frequently ended up as minorities in states with a different linguistic and ethnic majority. From a geo-economic perspective, country borders often cut through regions that evolved organically and developed corresponding transportation routes. The breaking up and separation of these regions severed raw material suppliers from their processing industries. To varying degrees, all border region populations ended up disadvantaged. The effects of seclusion caused tangible damage, as well as economic and social deformities for the state overall.
