Summary/Abstract: This present paper stems from the statement that the current Latin American narrative cannot be studied using nationalistic parameters. The paper reflects on the distinction between national and nationalistic literature and questions the application of the concept of exterritoriality coined by George Steiner (1972) in the field of literature, with the objective of proposing alternative forms of characterization. Last, but not least, this paper reports on the relatively recent polemics between literary localism and nationalism, which has spawned between Ecuadorian writers Leonardo Valencia and Fernando Balseca.
