Summary/Abstract: The questioning of the relationship between history and fiction, writing and the establishment, memory and language, represents a key problem during the entire development of Latin American literature, from the chronicles of discovery, the conquest and colonization, the wars of Independence, to the present day. There is no doubt that the history of Latin America is not clear in many places. Writers are trying to fill these gaps in history; one cannot deny their right to recourse to imagination, which is the essence of their art. Since history is written by the ruling class and the winners, the only way to express different points of view and opinions and to challenge the official discourse is to write novels. Many Latin American writers offer different readings of history and in this way their work is presented as a counterweight to official history.
