Summary/Abstract: In this paper, I would like to deal with the definition of proper names and arrive at a unified pragmatic-semantic-syntactic view of them which is at least valid for modern European languages. In the process, the notion of proper name will be contrasted with the notion of proprial lemma. Finally, I will investigate whether proper names always originate in a so-called ‘baptismal act’, i.e. a speech act of name-giving.
