Summary/Abstract: The membership of Romanian in the “Balkansprachbund” is still a litigious matter. It is mainly the bad fame of the “Balkans” that hinders the Romanians to consider their language as an important part of this linguistic union. Linguistically, the Latin origin of Romanian and belonging to the “Balkansprachbund” do not contradict each other. The structural similarities with the neighbouring Bulgarian and also with Albanian and partly with Greek are too evident and cannot be neglected. Maybe the development of contact linguistics will help us to overcome the ideological obstacles and come to a better understanding of the facts. A hopeful sign is that Introducere în lingvistica balcanică, a book this author wrote together with Ariton Vraciu, could eventually appear in Iaşi in 1999, after 25 years of waiting for publication.
