Summary/Abstract: Using most varied written sources and field research material, collected by herself, the author has made an analysis of sea fishing as a livelihood in the present-day Southern Bulgarian Black Sea from the end of the 19th century to the 1940s. Its important characteristics have been pointed out: direct dependence on the conditions of the ecological sea environment; urban character; its being practiced by various social strata within the frameworks of an intricate ethnic milieu; its close relations with other subsystems of society. All this gives grounds to discuss sea fshing as an integral system of material forms, socio-regulative relations, world outlook conceptions and customs and ritual practices, i.e. as an intricate cultural phenomenon, referred to by the author as “culture of sea fishing”.
