Summary/Abstract: The study Translation: possibilities and limits. The problematics of cultural transference in literary translations from Japanese deals with the analysis of the phenomenon of translation from the perspective of cultural transference, with exemplifications from Romanian translations of the Japanese writer Yasunari Kawabata. As a way of access towards cultural transference, alterity and various imaginaries, translation becomes one of the essential coordinates of the present, a real necessity in contemporary world. Translation, interpretation and hermeneutics, in the process of transference from author to addressee, mediated by the translator, requires from the translator great sensibility and a necessary look from inside towards the cultural dimension offered by the respective text. A great deal of attention is also required regarding the issue of cultural identity raised by literary translations. Translation is equally a linguistic and cultural operation, especially because a text cannot be reduced to its linguistic expression, but represents the product of an entire cultural context, whose texture is made legible by the translator, in a creative gesture. Sense is not given, but has to be constructed, created, respecting the genius of every language, the culture of every people.
