Summary/Abstract: The question that the present paper inquires is whether exploration of the ‘autobiographical’ and of public and private-archive gives Jennifer Johnston argument for character-construction or not and to what extent the tension between tradition and modernity is reflected in it. We relied on the theoretical demonstration, on the writer’s interviews and public declarations as well as on approaches to the recent developments of the Irish novel.
