BALANCING OPPOSITES. THE FICTIONS OF URSULA K. LE GUIN

Summary/Abstract: The present study highlights what we believe to be the fundamental coordinate of Ursula Kroeber Le Guin’s literary creation, namely, the deconstruction of the system of binary opposition central to Western thought. In a brief survey of some of the main novels published by the American author, we examine the manner in which a general pursuit of balance and equilibrium is achieved through the reconciliation of seemingly contradictory elements like good and evil (A Wizard of Earthsea), male and female (The Left Hand of Darkness, The Tombs of Atuan, Tehanu), freedom and constraint (The Dispossessed), and, more generally, discourse and objective reality.Cette étude met en évidence ce que nous croyons être l’élément fondamental de l’oeuvre littéraire de Ursula Kroeber Le Guin, plus précisément, la déconstruction du système de cette opposition binaire qui est primordiale dans la pensée occidentale. Dans une brève analyse de quelques principaux romans publiés par l’écrivaine américaine, nous examinons la manière dans laquelle la quête permanente de l’équilibre est achevée par la réconciliation des éléments apparemment contradictoires comme le bien et le mal (A Wizard of Earthsea), masculin et féminin (The Left Hand of Darkness, The Tombs of Atuan, Tehanu), liberté et contrainte (The Dispossessed) et, plus généralement, discours et réalité objective.
