Summary/Abstract: The article investigates the public images of a coherent Bulgarian nation created under state-and party policy guided by the principles of internationalism. The analysis is confined in the period of establishment and normalisation of the new order (1944-1969) and attempts to analyse the strategies of appropriation of national past's symbolic capitals by the socialist state. Based on texts in different genres connected with two per-socialistic national holidays — the 24th May and the 2nd June — the paper lightens up the discursive techniques for embracement of non-socialistic national symbols and their legitimising energy in the communist project of forced rewriting of history and constructing of a new collective identity. The analysed texts from the period show the espropriative potentiality and flexibility of the socialistic language due to which an impairment of the revolutionary Marxist phraseology with the languages of national Enlightenment becomes possible which leads to an unproblematic appropriation of the old collective symbols.
