Summary/Abstract: In the article I present first the status of orthography in the most important former grammars of the Polish Language (from the end of 18th to half of 20th century) and then the position of punctuation within the syntax of that time. I also characterize some matters of terminology and the process of gradual codification of punctuation (from Kopczyński to Jodłowski) against the background of which I reveal the theoretical principles and normative settlements included in {PWN Orthographic Dictionary of the Polish Language (Słownik ortograficzny języka polskiego PWN)} edited by Mieczysław Szymczak. And finally I analyze the completeness and the accuracy of punctuation principles as well as the examples in Szymczak’s {Dictionary} in the context of contemporary knowledge.
