Organisational problems and trends in the development of hospice/palliative care in EU countries and Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: After the legal definition of hospices as hospitals in 1999, their development was left to private initiative. Meny of the hospices initially registered in the country failed to survive. The purpose of this article is to investigate problems in the organization and development of hospices in selected EU countries and Bulgaria. The results show that the main problems in the work of hospices in Bulgaria are financial and organizational. In order to enable more patients to experience the benefits of palliative care, the involvement of government in their development should be increased.
