Summary/Abstract: The world is sliced up by invisible lines. To every single piece there corresponds a word pair: sweet–bitter, cold–warm, good–bad, weekday–holiday, city–forest, body–spirit, dark–light. When they pushed open the heavy, green gate (blackly curling iron scrolls imprisoned in a glass oblong), they were still at home; when it closed behind them, no longer. At noon (if the window was open, the chiming of the bells drifted in from several quarters), for a fraction of a second, time would balance, like a see-saw, between morning and afternoon.
