Summary/Abstract: From 1949, the dictatorship of the Communist Party replaced multiparty democracy in Hungary. Under the dictatorship, the institution uniting the party and the state security service was variously called the State Defence Office (ÁVO) and the State Defence Authority (ÁVH); at one time it was called (Political-Investigative) Directorate II, later (State Security) Directorate III, depending on the organizational structure. No matter what it was called, it was to perform the same political supervisory function.
