Summary/Abstract: The Miracle of Nicula: Comparing the Findings of the Inquiry (1699), Maria Virgo Claudiopolitana (1714) and Historia Thaumaturgae Virginis Claudiopolitanae (173[6]) This article follows the discovering of a yet unanalysed printed history about the miracle that happened in 1699 in Nicula: MarIa VIrgo CLaUDIopoLItana seU // GenUIna De LaChryMosa VIrgIne ReLatIo (1714) by Franciscus Roys SJ is the missing link between the enquiry established in 1699 by two Jesuit fathers and Historia Thaumaturgae Virginis Claudiopolitanae (173[6]), the most famous of the histories describing the miracle. Mainly based on the record of the enquiry, Maria Virgo Claudiopolitana also introduces new information from a yet unidentified source that might be the lost De origine et progressu cultus et lacrymis prodigiosis Claudiopolitanae Iconis by Rudolf Bzensky SJ. Historia Thaumaturgae... reveals to be an enriched copy of Maria Virgo Claudiopolitana; its only other source is the record of the enquiry. Comparing the enquiry, Maria Virgo Claudiopolitana and Historia Thaumaturgae, also reveals a progressive catholicization and “jesuitization” of the miracle.
