Summary/Abstract: Jews in Europe who stayed sought to rebuild the communal, Torah-instilled bridge between the profane and the sacred which existed before the catastrophe. Finding themselves in Europe, inspired by memories of their earlier religious life, they took it upon themselves to reconstruct their access to sanctity. Those who yearned to leave, built a different bridge – one between Europe and Palestine. They sought to walk across this bridge and reside in sacred territory – distanced once and for all from Amalek. The former carried an implicit ideology: Despite Hitler’s “No” to Judaism, they would leap ahead to recapture the sanctity of Torah-centered existence. with the latter, ideology was explicit: To participate in a higher destiny, whereby Torah, land and people coalesced in anticipation of redemption.
