Summary/Abstract: The 1965 essay of Sir Hector Hetherington was part of discussion of a newly prepared university act which took place at the Charles University. Based on his extensive experience and years of systematic research, the author analyses the pros and cons of academic autonomy in historical and current context. Though Hetherington is rooted mainly in the British context, his conclusions have a general validity.
