Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes an episode from the fifth part of L.N. Tolstoy's novel “Anna Karenina”, which reveals the attitudes of Alexey Vronsky and the artist Mikhailov towards creativity (in painting). Two different life strategies represented in the images of Vronsky and Mikhailov are interpreted: the way of refusal from your mission and the way of serving it. It is asserted that the ability to see things is a privilege of those who devote themselves to serving a chosen activity.
