Summary/Abstract: Archaeological investigations were carried out on a number of occasions at Gradina and Banje between the publication of the first details of the site at Gradina in Ošanići near Stolac and 1991, some accompanied by conservation works over short stretches of the walls. The first comprehensive, systematic conservation of the site began only in 2007-2008, and was carried out by the National Museum in Sarajevo. The initial phase covered the megalithic wall with its gates and towers at Gradina (the Acropolis). This paper offers a detailed account of the methodological approach to the preservation of the physical structure of this part of the site, applied during the analytical and diagnostic stage of drawing up the first part of the conservation project. In her presentation of the findings of the first working stage, a two-year process, the author explains the course, methodology and results of the conservation investigations and analyses conducted to date; describes the diagnostic instruments and decision-making mechanisms; and presents and interprets, within the specific context, the process of prolonging the life of the materials of the monument that is to be applied.
