Summary/Abstract: Paper theatre is a kind of a toy and a form of home entertainment. Because of the technique, the theatrical toy is related to puppet theatre, and because of the repertoire and staging solutions – it is connected to the drama theatre and opera. Paper theatre flourished in the second half of the 19 th century. Among others Winston Churchill, Jean Cocteau, and Orson Welles played with it. The stage of a paper theatre appeared in films of Perdro Almodóvar, Ingmar Bergman, Franco Zeffirelli, Terry Gilliam and Agnieszka Holland as part of the decoration, a prop recalling the old days, a toy or a “carrier of the message”. The subject of this article is the function of paper theatre in Luchino Visconti’s "The Leopard". The text also highlights the importance of public theatre and home théâtre de société for the intellectual and spiritual development of Luchino Visconti and Giuseppe Tomasi, whose novel "The Leopard" became the basis of the film adaptation.
