Summary/Abstract: This article deals with word order in French, namely with the positions of the nominal subject S, which can be placed either before or after the verb V within a sentence. It is argued that choosing S V or V S depends on various syntactic and semantic constraints. The utterance thus produced is shown to carry specific communicative information which, in turn, reflects different types of discourse structures.
