Summary/Abstract: This paper sets off a parallel between two types of syntactic constructions : the French absolute nominal constructions, which can be included in the broader category of detached constructions, and the Romanian prepositional phrases functioning as second predication introduced by cu (with). We believe that the Romanian constructions are equivalent to those in French, although the latter are not introduced by any preposition : Le front collé sur la vitre, il les regarde passer. – Cu fruntea lipită de geam, (el) îi priveşte trecând. This paper emphasizes not only the syntactic and semantic similarities, but also the differences between the two types of constructions. These represent the reduction of some deep predicative structures in the surface structures, which explains the fact that we may consider them a secondary predication inside a primary predication.
