Summary/Abstract: We study the way the assertive sentence functions in G. Apollinaire’s poem “Alcohols”, by means of an analysis of Romanian translations, in order to measure the semantic and communicational effects the postposition of the nominal subject might exhibit. The conclusion of our research is that the word order shift under scrutiny is predicted by general mechanisms of the linguistic system, rather than constituting a violation of its rules, although the above mentioned mechanisms are sometimes largely overexploited by the poet.
