Revising the French Model (Coordination and Restructuring in French Industry during the 1980s)

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the main features of French economic transformation in recent years. The diagnosis of the causes determining changes has a remarkable similarity to the corresponding diagnosis of Bulgarian economic problems during the transition. The article contains a brief, systematic overview of the major changes since the mid-1970s and down to the present, and discusses various explanations of these changes given in contemporary French economic literature, as well as the possible usefulness of an approach based on coordination. In the third part of the article, the author presents the overall history of the problem: how the crisis of the French production system led to changes in the basic parameters of the French model, how the State and the elites responded and how their responses brought about a new organization of the French production regime. In the fourth part, the author sums up the main points of his analysis and defines certain issues concerning the viability and the prospects of the new French model.
