Summary/Abstract: The Return to a Country Torn Asunder reconstructs the troubling picture of the countries which emerged from former Yugoslavia through daily scenes, places, people, buildings and roads, which make up a complex puzzle in the author’s memory and which he rediscovers under a new face. A mere tourist, a pilgrim in his former country, the author revisits the past of the former empire, as well as his own past. The comparisons between what used to be and the present are unavoidable, and not very flattering for the latter. He finds opulence as a challenge to the past and euphoria as a mask of pain. That does not mean that there is no hope, that the rejuvenating spiritual strength has altogether vanished.
