Summary/Abstract: A Certain Idea of Europe is a conference given by the author in 2004, at the Nexus Institute in Amsterdam. The famous English writer lists the distinct peculiarities of our continent and, most prominently, he analyses its spirit and its values. This charming research does not forget to mention that Europe is defined, among others, through the fact that from Lisbon to Odessa and from Copenhaguen to Palermo you meet coffee shops, or that the scenery is always on a human scale, with places spaced out within walking distance. Europe, Steiner points out, has inherited the thinking of Athens and Jerusalem and it boasts the self-consciousness which derives from the sum total of the religious beliefs regarding the final destiny of Man and of the world.
