Summary/Abstract: The environmental situation has been interesting for military use since the beginning of human life because it was always necessary to know where and how to manage operations and provisioning. Therefore integrating military sources in the research on environmental history can help to improve the results in a substantial manner. In the 18th century, at the latest, more and more information was gathered about the topography and resources to enhance military strategies. Surveying cartography, which started to be developed in the late 17th century, was mostly based on military need and had the big advantage to provide a more realistic idea of space and its conditions. One of the most famous examples in Central Europe is the cartography work of almost all parts of the Habsburg Empire by Joseph II. (1765-1790). He ordered the modern survey of the provinces for producing maps and descriptions about local details of the landscape.
