Summary/Abstract: The world capitalist system degenerated when it became dominated by the financial capital which made investment in financial markets the main form of economic activity. The faults of this system were made clear by the present persistent crisis. World development conditions are changing also under the impact of continuous population growth which causes deficiencies of food and water supply, leading also to ecological destruction due to predatory exploitation of natural resources. Hope to overcome these threats to future development may be offered by the development of knowledge. This, however, would require a change of the socio-economic system towards introducing more rational steering into the market economy. This presupposes coordinated international action supported by related policies of individual countries. With regard to Poland, a particularly negative feature of its present socio-economic system is wide polarization of the society in terms of income and wealth distribution, which does not allow the formally existing democratic system to function properly. Hence the need to look for change. What is needed is the reduction of poverty and limitation of income polarization, and also adjustment of the system of governance to the quickly changing set of social needs. A basic requirement is consolidation of democracy and prevention of any endeavors to re-introduce an authoritarian regime. Consideration of the problem of the value systems leads to rejection of the concepts of both solidarism and neoliberalism in favor of that of democratic liberalism implemented by a flexible civic society.
