Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with two typical examples demonstrating the effects of falsehoods in cases where there was insufficient reason to doubt the truth of the matter: the Sokolov “hound,” and the Jewell case. The first relates to the scientific media and community, the second to flawed assumptions by journalists investigating a certain event. The former was a clear case of trust in the work and ethical conduct of a scientific authority, while in the second, press reports were based on unreliable information. Both related to an incident, and are thus typical cases for a scientific analysis of published untruths. They are also cautionary, in that in the first case, falsehood was used in the process of discovering the truth, while the second was an example of media eagerness to accuse and judge leading journalists down the path of misrepresentation and gross violation of privacy.
