Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the controversy between the German historian Konrad Bittner and the Czech Slavist Frank Wollman. In the larger context of the Slavonic research of the time Bittner published in 1934 an opinion that in the whole of European culture the Slavonic literatures have an inferior a dependent position as a result of the historical development. To Bittner’s conclusions responses Frank Wollman referring to the structural variability of Slavonic literatures as well as to the principle of their organicity that enable them to enter into the context of the World literature.
