Summary/Abstract: Some believe that journalism is an academic field and it deserves eminent theoretical attention. Others see it simply as a professional skill and believe that journalism schools are here to improve those practical abilities. Meanwhile programs in Europe have more courses dealing with theory, the situation in the US is very different. Regardless, the question of whether journalism schools should be more theoretical or practical remains unanswered. Some found a balance, such as the College of Journalism and Communication at the University of Florida. Their program is considered to be one of the best in a country. In this paper we take it as an example and through my personal observation as a visiting scholar at the Department of Journalism and discussions with of their own students and faculty members will try to figure out what makes it so excellent.
