Summary/Abstract: Fariduddin Muhammed Attar, the well known Iranian 12th century gnostic and poet, left behind a host of gazels, qasidas and rubaiyats, as well as several gnostic poems in the form of mesnevi, as well as a prose piece Memoirs of the Saints. This is a collection of biographies of a number of prominent Sufi figures. Just like in his gnostic poems, Attar refers to numerous spiritual leaders of his own and earlier times, and presents his view of them. According to Attar, a particular place should be assigned to Abu Said Abul-Khayr, a gnostic and poet from the late 10th and early 11th century. Because of his colourful personality and unusual views, often opposed to not only the positions of the official, institutional Islamic scholars, but also the opinion of other Sufi scholars, Abu said caused numerous controversies and acquired quite a few followers, as well as enemies. This paper attempts to elaborate why Attar thought Abu Said to be more prominent, more valuable and more significant than other Sufi thinkers, although one can assume that, judging by what we know about Attar, he did not agree with Abu Said’s positions and actions.
