Summary/Abstract: The focus of the paper is to study how cultural differences shape motivation and career development behaviour of academic communities in Bulgaria and Greece. Both nations have to renew their labour organizations because of the forthcoming knowledge-based economy and information society. The comparative study reveals how various factors shape scholars’ behaviour in joint research teams. The results show that cultural values give the frame for different meanings of the same factors in the two investigated cultures. Everyday work environment and economic standard of life are highly valued by both neighbours’ academic communities, but the ways Bulgarian and Greek scholars evaluate them are different. The focus of the study is to show mobility readiness of the two academic communities to work in networks and to joint knowledge-based economy. A new non-statistical technique of path analysis is used to examine and diagnose the social situation.. This technique makes possible to examine not only the influence of each investigated factor on the behavior and construct a type of hierarchy, but to estimate the inter-relations among all investigated factors, to divulge dominated influences without ignoring the other ones.
