Summary/Abstract: This study presents the Holy League (Sancta Unio) of 1332–1336/7, the diplomatic moves which led to its establishment, the objectives on which its participants focused, as well as the results it achieved. These political problems are discussed in the context of the history of Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean in the first decades of the 14th century. Sancta Unio acquired crusade status and the support of the Papacy, Venice, France, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and Byzantium. The differences in the objectives and actions of the individual political forces which constituted it proved too varied and diverse to resolve the general directive – stopping Turkish expansion in the Eastern Mediterranean basin and limiting the political initiative of the West Anatolian beyliks. Although they achieved some success, such as the conquest of Mytilene or the victory at Adramyttium, the naval action of the Christian fleet (1332, 1336) did not prove decisive in achieving the main objective of the league. The author judges the actions of Sancta Unio in the years 1332–1336 as the first crusade aimed solely at stopping the Turkish expansion to the West. In this sense, this was also the first Holy League which served as an example for all subsequent similar political formations in the region.
