Summary/Abstract: Ethnographic studies of the contemporary scene are a penetration of professional intellectual culture as a fact typical of the socialist society. When analyzed they emphasize the role of the media of mass information and leisure. In the meantime, the ethnographic study of villages in Rousse district, made in 1975—1976, showed that interest in professional intellectual culture can be dated considerably earlier. All that qualitatively conditions the new life under socialism, marking a new stage in the development of this phenomenon is due to: 1) the creation of a material and technical base in the villages and of a system of media of mass information; 2) a marked increase in the quantitative indicators of the spread and adoption of the forms of professional intellectual culture not only in the village community, but also in the village family. The reasons for the penetration of professional intellectual culture in the village are sought for in the social, economic and cultural changes, and in changes in the world outlook which lead to changes in the structure and functions of the village family and the village community, and face the population with the necessity of seeking for new forms of realizing their productive and extra-productive activity, new sources of knowledge, corresponding to present-day requirements and new mechanisms for the training of personnel.
