Summary/Abstract: This article studies popular forms if organizing collective labour and mutual aid, as the Bulgarian peasants did in ploughing at the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th. On the basis of literary data and material collected on the spot the conclusion is reached that these phenomena were widespread all over the country. Common and typical signs of these phenomena have also been found and data are cited on the characteristic natural, social and economic conditions which serve to outline the existing basic varieties of traditional forms of mutual aid in labour in the plains and the hilly regions. The final conclusions are that these phenomena of the folk culture arc more directly conditioned by labour activities and social relations.
