Summary/Abstract: The grounds and scope of rote learning in religious education used in Polish schools have been an issue widely discussed among professionals. Hence the question can be raised about how different ways of using human memory may lead to effective catechetical teaching. Some answers may be found in disciplines dealing with the study of human memory and learning, namely cognitive psychology. In this paper cognitive psychology findings are used to discuss six goals of catechesis (development of belief cognition, liturgical education, moral education, teaching prayer, community and apostolic formation). By analyzing the mentioned above goals an answer to the question “what and how” a learner should memorise to make the acquired knowledge truly helpful in their belief development can be found. Taking into consideration what we have learned so far about the particular systems of human memory and processes of memorizing, storing, recalling and forgetting we can formulate demands for a course of action. The conclusions found in the paper are addressed not only to professionals and experts responsible for catechetical curriculum but also to individual religious education teachers planning and giving classes on a current basis.
