Summary/Abstract: This paper describes a phenomenon of Internet “trolling” from a criminological perspective. A brief introduction into the topic is presented together with a working definition of “trolling” and short description of its key characteristics. The paper than looks at historical evolution of this phenomenon and its current forms, emphasizing differences between “trolling” and cyberbullying – on the basis of perpetrators’ motivations and legal interests which are endangered by such actions. A brief presentation of possible explanations for prevalence of “trolling” in the current society is presented, based on ideas of Z. Bauman. Finally, selected successful and failed methods of preventing trolling are analysed, based on L. Lessig’s theory of four modalities of regulation on the Internet. A conclusion is reached that methods relying on restorative justice paradigm are most beneficial to those Internet communities which developed them as a means of fighting “trolling”.
