Summary/Abstract: The name and oeuvre of dr. Muhamed Hadzijajic are of great importance among the most distinguished scientists in 20th century Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was from an educated family (ulama), which engendered numerous scientists and artists from XVII century onwards. His ancestors, starting from Hajji Mustafa Mulisija, to his father, hajji-hafiz Džemaludin, were held in high esteem for their education and learning and for their devotion to their motherland, BiH. Continuing the family tradition, over a period of 50 years of active work, dr. Muhamed Hadžijahić (1918-1986) wrote and published more than 400 papers and books. He noted very early that there were gaps in history books, with many pages still unwritten. He underscored that in several papers. With his books and research papers, he tried to provide answers to such questions, while displaying an exceptional width and scope of knowledge. During his creative work, he was mainly focused on the history of BiH and of Bosniaks. He left an indelible mark on the historical and cultural heritage of the country and the people he belonged to. His principal interest was the medieval and the Ottoman period, but he also wrote about the more recent history of BiH. He was clear and realistic in his writing, always providing ample substantiation for his work. He was often challenged, mainly by authors who disliked Hadžijahić’s writing as it rendered their own work unfounded. Over time, many of them recognised the shortcomings he had tried to point out. Posthumous publication of his later works and re-prints of his earlier books are the best illustration of how highly appreciated he was, both as a person and as a scientist. That is why any study of the history of BiH must not bypass the name and work of dr. Muhamed Hadžijahić.
