Summary/Abstract: Bildung, a western cultural ideal, reached its culminaton point by the turning of the 18-19th century. Since the basis of Bildung was formed by the variations of classical erudition, in the Age of Bildung the defining epistemological and methodological pattern was that of classical philology. As a young and talented philologist Nietzsche was among the first to point out the metascientific and simultaneously, the cultural scandal of domination established and maintained by Bildung’s homologous hermeneutical practice. This article presents how the Nietzschean propositions did set the stage for Karl Kerényi’s later concept of philology as an ’existential science’, which was aimed to de(con)struct the Bildung’s classical philological ideal and opened up Kerényi’s philological investigations towards the Jungian psychoanalysis and a certain kind of cultural anthropology.
