Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the discipline of biblical archaeology that from its origins in the second half of the nineteenth century aimed its research in an apologetic way: it was supposed to bring arguments in favour of historical reliability of the Hebrew Bible. Since the 1970s number of scientists grew who disagreed with this methodology and questioned its results. This was related mainly to the Exodus and conquering of the Promised Land. The origin of a new society in Palestine at the beginning of the Iron Age, formerly ascribed to the invasion of Israelites fl eeing from Egypt, is nowadays interpreted as adaptive mechanism of a local Canaan population.
