Debate is Going Still. Meditations on the Meaning of the Lexeme {debata}

Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to semantic-syntactic analysis of the lexeme {debata} ({debate}). Some dictionaries suggest a kind of synonymous relation between {debata} and {dyskusja}, but it is not true. The author focuses on syntactic positions, using of the noun {debata} and try to confront the meaning of {debata} and {dyskusja} as well. Logical operations (conjunction, disjunction, implication) lead to the conclusion that the noun debata has a very specialised meaning which should not be explicated by ‘długa dyskusja’. A full answer to the question of the meaning of the noun {debata} – according to the author – will become possible only after a analysis of the verb {debatować}.
