Summary/Abstract: The first part of the paper is devoted to the reconstruction of the New Testament vision of the heart through an analysis of language units and constructions featuring the lexeme in question. The main purpose of the work is to establish the differences between the senses and uses of the lexeme in contemporary Polish and in the New Testament. On the basis of examples the author tries to prove that the New Testament notion of ‘heart’ includes such concepts as emotions, reason and conscience. It encompasses the spirit, the soul and the body of a human being. In the second part of the paper the author discusses contemporary Polish constructions of Biblical origin. Through analysis of these expressions she tries to trace the influence of Bible translation on the linguistic image of the heart in contemporary Polish.
